Proposal for final- Hussein
Ideas are sorted according to preference
The first idea I have is that of tracing the motion happening in martial arts. I was inspired by a photographer who took pictures of people dancing in the link below. I imagined applying the same technique to martial arts and have them 3d printed. I am a little stuck on how this could be done with a Kinect but I think there are many moves that will look quite interesting. If I figure out the technique of how this is done I think it will not take me a lot of time to do five models of the most interesting moves to me.

The second idea I had in mind was that related to the concept of growth and how nature grows in a way that is beyond mathematics. I am thinking of doing a simulation of all the stages of development starting from infants to adults and then somewhere in the middle have one milestone as the last natural face and then I will continue with the growth rate that was happening earlier. For example if the eyes grew x3 every year until you reach 4 and then they grow by 2.5 until you reach 15 and then they stop growing afterwards. I will try to play with having it actually continue growing in that rate which is 2.0 from 15 to 30 and then 1.5 from 30 to 45 and so on. It should be an installation where the faces will be put next to each other and have the viewer watch the development as they are passing by.
The third idea I had in mind was that of getting the points of internet connections and locations of people connected to social media and then compare that network to outer space. It should be an installation having both of them 3d printed next to each other.
1. The photographs you link as your inspiration are amazing. So nicely done that the only drawback is how will you do this with your own flavor and make it cooler than or as cool as these 2d versions? Im not sure how to achieve what you’re looking for with Kinect tracking, but if you do figure it out (and I’m sure you’ll figure out some way of doing it) I would be really interested in seeing the outcome. You are clearly most interested in this first idea and I think you should go for it.
2. This second idea is also really intriguing, and seems more straightforward in the technical side of how you would achieve it. It may end up on the uncanny side or be really humorous juxtaposed to the natural growth rates. What is the medium you are thinking of presenting it in? If the development is displayed as a continuing process in the installation, is it digital or 3D printed? I like that this plays with some of the natural and biological inspirations you presented on early in thesis studio, and it would be a cool way to compare algorithms of growth that nature presents and digital manipulations of these natural processes.
3. This idea is a little unclear. What exactly are you comparing internet connection data to? Outer space is a really (literally) broad system. But maybe that’s the idea you’re trying to get at? That our remote connections via the internet bridge together vast spaces? Will you compare it to galaxies? It would be really hard to represent the entirety of outer space. Will you concentrate on a certain portion or qualitative aspect of it? You probably have more knowledge of what you’re trying to get at than I do and I think you need to expand on the idea more. Would it be a data visualization piece? What would be the scale of these condensed representation of large spaces?
the first project is such a great idea that if you can overcome and figure out the 3D scanning of the moves it would be such a new character for 3D printing. also I recommend you to take a look at kinetic sculptures just as an inspiration for your idea, or the kind of data visualization projects that can give you a better image for the shape and look of the object at the end. great work!
