My Final project deals with 3 elements: the corner of Ridge St and Delancey  St, birds, and the Williamsburg Bridge.

I chose to hang paper birds from various parts of the underside and support trusses of the block between Pitt St and Ridge St along Delancey St. Both the corner of Pitt and Ridge along Delancey had live poultry shops in the past.IMG_20151215_162044

I started with a model which I obtained from TurboSquid.com.

PepakuraBird1

I brought the model into Pepakura and exported it as a PDF. I then opened up the PDF in Illustrator and changed the solid and dashed vector lines to blue and red for cutting and etched folds, respectively.

I laser cut the pattern on canvas paper. I made three copies and began assembling the three birds. The first bird took me 5 hours, but the second and third bird only took a little over 2 hours each. I used hot glue to fix and adhere the flaps.

I am using a loop of aluminum wire wrapped and epoxied to a neodymium magnet as a fastener. The bird is suspended from the fastener using fishing string.

The bird was finished with Blair spray gloss coating for moisture resistance.

Update: In less than 36 hours after it was installed, the bird, line, and magnet have been removed.
