Assignment 3 – Vicky

Object with a twist.

When I thought about this assignment, I thought big. I wanted to implement the object I would make and apply it in real life. So I thought about knife, fork and spoons that we use daily and the idea of twisting their design and replacing them in my home. So when my sister would go crab a fork she would be surprised.

But that didn’t happen and I got really frustrated. I just learned how to use Rhino the other day and I wanted to do something like this:

With a lot of successive failure, I decided I needed to move on and leave this project for another time when I have more experience.

So, I decided to play with humans knowledge. We are all familiar with the Exit signs that we automatically know it without even reading it or paying close attention. My idea was to twist this sign and would place in a public space to see people’s reaction.

This is the sign I created in Rhino. I didn’t want to download anything from thingiverse. I wanted to create every by me. So I simplified it, and  used shapes, text and line to create it. Here are the screenshots of my work:

And here is a fake application of this twisted sign in the real world:

So I decided to do another object with a twist with other tools we learned during the semester.

I used Meshmixer to manipulate two different objects to create a different one.

So I downloaded two different files – one from a gorilla and another from a bear. I wanted to mix around and explore tools in Meshmixer.

Here are some screenshots.

To make it a little bit different I played around with the Sculpt tool, using brush to add ear and but and remove some of the muscles.

3D print:

First attempt to 3D print failed. I figured out I needed to add a floor to hold the character. ( Forgot to take a picture).

Second attempt worked really well. I added supporters to it.
