Bryan \\ This Is My Brain on a Build Plate

For my self-portrait, I started by digging up a set of old MRI slides of my brain:

IMAG5090

I wanted to derive silhouettes from these in Grasshopper, so I created a series of highly-simplified silhouettes in Photoshop:

BrainCut_10 BrainCut_7 BrainCut_4 BrainCut _0

I created 11 slices total. In Grasshopper, I imported and sampled these images. To do rough edge detection, I checked each sampled UV’s value against the value of the UV next to it:

GrasshopperSingleSection

It gave me a series of points for each slice, which I then sorted and derived curves from:

RhinoRend10

Here’s the whole Grasshopper file (repeating the process for all slices):

GrasshopperWhole

I then lofted the curves together to create a vaguely brain-shaped form:

RhinoRend8

RhinoRend7

RhinoRend3

RhinoRend2

RhinoRend4

RhinoRend5

…and from there, I exported and printed on an Ultimaker. The bottom half of the print was pretty fail-y, but it took shape about 1/3rd of the way up:

I will close with a quote from The Walking Dead:

“BRAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINS!!!”

Grasshopper File.
