Digital Flo$$ – Hanyang
My original idea for this project was to scan the clock at Grand Central at different times of the day to get different models generated from different lighting conditions. Then I would create a sundial with the each scanned model marking a corresponding hour. When I tried to scan the clock in the morning and evening as a prototype, the result was far from satisfactory. Because there are so many artifacts from the digital scan, there was hardly any difference in the final generated model from each time.
So my next idea was to create a sculpture that embodies digital decay. I ended up creating a series of sculptures based on merging a scanned model with a lot of artifact and a “perfect” model I created. Each sculpture represent a different mix between the two. The first sculpture was a complete merged model of the two models. The subsequent sculptures has the pert one slowly emerging from this merged model like a cell dividing itself. And the final series form a pattern similar to the common charts representing evolution.
Unfortunately, the print failed 3 times, so I was not able to produce a physical object. However, I was able to create a 3D rendering of what the sculpture could have looked like.
