Review for Bryan, Miri & Jas/Grace – By Regina
Bryan:
Octopus – I really like this one a lot – its my favorite! You seem to be doing a lot of physical “data viz” projects (guns map, etc) and so I like that this is in the same vein. I think its cool that you often have a political angle to your work. I think this one sounds like the most feasible. One suggestion: you could also play with scale here which could be interesting as well as use some of the newer modalities we have learned like the metal shop.
Brith of Buddha – I think that it may be hard to “see where they float” unless you imbed some sensors to track their movements. The other issue here is that people don’t really interact with the river (it’s polluted), so there is low probability that anyone will receive the message. And if they do, how will you know they did? If there was a way of tracking and recording the message that would be cool. Question: is there a way to bring it to the streets where the people actually are? i.e. graffiti? 🙂
Verizon – I understand the impetus and I like it, but I think you could push the implementation a bit here. Could there be some kind of interaction with the viewer/user? It is unclear to me how you will communicate the message of “failure” if they are just 3D printed boxes. What if there was some kind of interface where a user entered in a url and each time they pressed a key they heard a dial-up modem sound and the browser never actually loaded a page… ? Is there something to illustrate your point more strongly then just the boxes? Concept good though!
Miri:
Poetry Sculpture – I like this concept a lot! I think it is interesting how you seem to be following this general theme in your work (i.e. your quantum box and bunny script). You are drawn to this idea of creating an artistic “coding language” and bringing “art” back into the digital language/making. I think this could be a really interesting continuation and stream of your work in DT. I would love it if the sculptures were really big! I think one of the reason Quantum Box was so awesome was the sheer scale you used. It would be cool to see some giant stuff!
Thesis Geometry – I like this! I think in terms of thesis this could be really great as a short side project that could serve both as documentation or as a stand alone project. People love physical stuff and since you are working totally in the digital space for thesis, this could be really awesome to see the physical nature of the world you are creating. You could also projection map onto the installed pieces. Also, would be cool to see them at different scales – small and large!
Bunnies – I know you love bunnies, so of course this is on trend with your overall work! Sometimes its nice to just be playful… if you are feeling in that mood – go for it! Everything you make is beautiful so I am sure whatever you come up with will be great!
Jas & Grace:
Glass – I like the fact that you are using alternative materials and pushing the boundaries of what is covered in this class! That is awesome! it is not clear to me though what you are proposing to make? What artist installation will this exploration in glass making become? I am sure you both saw the Neri Oxman glass exhibit at MIT (if you didn’t check it out – she made a 3D printer that extrudes glass). So the technique is super cool, but the pieces she exhibited were not super profound. In fact I was left feeling like “thats it 🙁 “…. So if you do this project with the glass – what awesome amazing thing will you make? You both are so freaking talented and everything you make is beautiful, so I am sure it will be awesome… I am so curious what it will be!
Kinetic Sculpture – Awesome! I also am not clear what the piece will be. But how AMAZING that you already made the 3D models! Thats impressive! Again, I know you both will make something awesome. Can’t wait to see it! What about combining the glass and the kinetic sculpture???
