Self-Portrait: Helmet Ring (Grace)

I decided to change my idea from utilizing sound amplitude to create geometric shapes to a facial portrait using paneling. My final self-portrait was a armored, anglo saxon helmet ring. The helmet on the ring symbolizes how I always tend to think by making with my hands. I feel as if I’m always in “battle mode” when making things. I am also a huge fan of old medieval movies or sci-fi fantasy films like Lord of the Rings. The armored helmet represents the way I feel when working. Thus, my project is an abstract self-portrait in the form of an accessory (ring).

***A special thanks to Jaskirat for teaching me how to change mesh faces to surfaces. It was overall an exploration on using Grasshopper and Rhino to create shapes in the following steps:

1.) I first learned to find my ring size (5.5), which is 16 mm in diameter and add it as a place holder onto Rhino

2.) Then I created a circle and extruded the shape to create a ring. I used the “FilletEdge” command to create the soft curved edges for the ring.

3.) I downloaded a pre-existing head (low-poly model).

4.) Looked into the tutorial from Jaskirat (vimeo) to convert from mesh to surface.

5.) I pulled the raw low-poly head and created surfaces for half of the head.

6.) I selected the panels on half-headed model to make a helmet

7.) Then, created a geometry (the shape pattern for my helmet). A square was lofted with an octagon.

8.) Then I deleted the ears, nose, mouth, and eyes until, only the skull portion was left. (Resulting in a helmet form)

9.) The surfaces inside the helmet were extruded to provide a thicker layer.

10.) Finally, the helmet was mirror to create a full head and was stacked onto the ring.

Conclusion:

The most important takeaway was learning paneling of the octagon shapes into a desired pattern which, was then wrapped around the head. For my final project, I hope to work on the previous (CSV data on body motion) project to create different types of earrings (Voroni, Paneling patterns etc)
