[Shakti] Final project proposal
I only have one idea, so I’ll just jump right to it. (I am, however, looking for feedback in terms of the final output.. so any feedback/ideas on that would be awesome.)
391,000 Brooklynites commute to Manhattan each day. Last year, I used to live off the J/M/Z trains and so everyday I would travel from Brooklyn to Manhattan…. since they were above ground trains, it meant that I would get to see the manhattan skyline each morning.
This year, I moved to downtown brooklyn, and now take the A/C trains… which are underground. This also means I don’t get to see the manhattan skyline everyday. I started to reminisce how although just a short couple of minutes, being able to see the skyline everyday was kinda neat… especially for someone who sits in front of her computer screen all day. And although this sounds cheesy… whether subconsciously or not, being able to see the skyline every morning reminded me that I was part of this amazing city, and gave me a sense of belonging to something bigger than myself. I would loove to hear other peoples’ take on this… and for my final project, I want to do qualitative research on this, and gather qualitative data on how other people feel about this. I will ask a bunch of questions, but will focus on “feelings” and “emotions” as a direct result of being able to see the skyline on the bk-to-manhattan commute.
With the qualitative data, I would like to create/match the feelings/emotions with colors. I will then associate certain colors with certain subway lines, and ultimately create different colors for different train lines based on my findings. And then use all that stuff to create some crazy light visualisation as a result. (featured img credit: https://www.behance.net/gallery/762017/In-Transit-NYC)
I’m sure you don’t have one idea Shakti! But it’s a pretty good one – so you’re lucky.
Great emotional hook – got me interested. Can totally relate and I’m sure many other NYC residents can too.
I’m still unclear exactly what you want to make, I can see the elements and imagine my own light visualization – but how does that relate to the data? Define how you will collect qualitative data – it’s a bit of a buzz word but it’s not really working. The data you collect will inform how you execute and display that data – so locking that down should help.
Your observation is very interesting. Seeing the Manhattan skyline while going to work / school is definitely motivating and inspiring. I can only imagine having this view taken way can be very frustrating. So what I would suggest is design a solution to compensate for this loss. Meaning if I am feeling frustrated, how does this object morph (change color, visualizes, light, dim..) in a way to make me feel more excited about my commute? I am a bit confused with this part “I will then associate certain colors with certain subway lines, and ultimately create different colors for different train lines based on my findings.’ If you can explain that we can talk more about possible mediums and materials.
Hi Shakti,
Your idea sounds clear and great. I would recommend researching on color theory and emotions. What colors represent what feelings?
For example, the white means death in Korean culture for funeral wear, whereas, it reflects marital ceremonies in the States.

Looking forward to seeing the the final work!
