Tyler + Udit // Final Project Proposals

Wind powered, self destructive noise sculpture
Mind Map :
unnamed
Concept and Form : Analog kinetic noise sculpture using 3d printed shells based on consumer tech devices, forms break down over time (based on idea of digital noise and obsolescence) with wind. The 3D printed shells will be layered within each other or be in conjugation with glass objects. Wind powered rotation will make the objects hit each other to produce noise and self-destruct.
Site : Windy city environment. Mounted on a city rooftop, wind tunnel between buildings…
Precedents and Moodboard :

1. Projection mapping on small different objects
Precedents:
Concept idea:
Grafting data transmission/surveillance instruments onto household objects and projection map abstract infrastructure-level relationships
2. Large scale shadow installation
Precedents:
Concept ideas:
Objects are warped mobile tech and surveillance devices, shadows form images of people (relationship of tech to construction of digital identity)
3. Kinetic sculptures with sound
Precedents:
Concept ideas:
– Large scale drum machine made from CNC wood or metal, geometric forms, using piezos and/or capactive surfaces to generate music/beats
– Analog kinetic noise machine (in style of Zimoun) using 3d printed forms based on consumer tech devices, forms break down over time (based on idea of digital noise and obsolescence)

Comments

  • I particularly like the idea of self destructing machine. It is very emotional and poetic to see a machine challenge its own mechanical permanence. Do you have a location of where you would like to install it? What are the size and material considerations?

  • Conceptually, I like the idea of nature being the one to destruct technology. But yes, I’d love to see a time-lapse of it happening.

  • hey guys the idea of the sound sculpture is super interesting. I need to talk to you as I had the same kind of inspiration earlier in the semester. I highly recommend to check out the work of george rickey, he is the father of kinetic sculpture. I will talk to you cause I don’t understand the purpose of self-destructing part of the installation.
