The form of an Octopus is a longstanding symbol for the influence of money in U.S. politics, as this cartoon from 1904 demonstrates:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Octopus-StandardOil.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1462\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1462\" src=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Octopus-StandardOil.jpg\" alt=\"Octopus-StandardOil\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Octopus-StandardOil.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Octopus-StandardOil-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Octopus form is also good for visualizing differences in data, because tentacles can be scaled to lengths or amounts. And, when done right, it&#8217;s an interesting and engaging form.<\/p>\n<p>We wound up focusing on money in New York politics to keep the project more locally relevant. This data &#8212; the top 8 contributors to political campaigns in New York&#8217;s 2014 State and Federal Eleections &#8212; was pulled from OpenSecrets.org:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2132\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2132\" src=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource-1024x197.png\" alt=\"DataSource\" width=\"1024\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource-1024x197.png 1024w, https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource-300x58.png 300w, https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource-768x148.png 768w, https:\/\/mikelberman.com\/pgraff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DataSource.png 1123w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see above, we used the amounts to calculate out proportionate lengths for each tentacle, setting the largest at 15 feet. We also calculated out the diameter of each tentacle at its base, and the base length of flattened-out plastic that we would have to use in order for each tentacle to inflate \/ round out into the proper 3-D cone size.<\/p>\n<p>Next, we did some small test prototypes of the &#8220;plastic welding&#8221; method we planned to use for the project. We taped this whole unit tightly over the out-blowing side of the fan, with a strong seal.
