Jaskirat & Grace : Final Proposal
Idea#1
Glass Spiral Generator:
It is an exploration of Glass as a machine material. There are 2 variable parameters of speed of spin and pull. It is an inquiry into how many forms and variations can emerge within specific constraints. The fidelity to the imagined CAD is tested against the fragility of extruded glass.
It looks into the craft of glass making. If the creators are given tools of precision and speed, what does it do to the original craft aesthetic?
Now does the craft only lies within code or the hands of the maker?
Idea#2
Kinetic Sculptures.
We want to explore how kinetic sculptures can project different visuals using light. We were inspired to make suggest forms that project a contrasting or unexpected visual through light. This explores gears, construction, and specific sizes for our sculpture using Rhino. We may laser cut wood or plexi glass for the final piece.
Hi Guys!
Glass: I like the fact that you are using alternative materials and pushing the boundaries of what is covered in this class! That is awesome! it is not clear to me though what you are proposing to make? What artist installation will this exploration in glass making become? I am sure you both saw the Neri Oxman glass exhibit at MIT (if you didn’t check it out – she made a 3D printer that extrudes glass). So the technique is super cool, but the pieces she exhibited were not super profound. In fact I was left feeling like “thats it 🙁 “…. So if you do this project with the glass – what awesome amazing thing will you make? You both are so freaking talented and everything you make is beautiful, so I am sure it will be awesome… I am so curious what it will be!
Kinetic Sculpture: Awesome! I also am not clear what the piece will be. But how AMAZING that you already made the 3D models! Thats impressive! Again, I know you both will make something awesome. Can’t wait to see it! What about combining the glass and the kinetic sculpture???
Hi Jas and Grace,
I’ll agree with Regina on her comment above.
I would say there is more things you could explore and do with the second idea. Kinect sculptures can turn out to be really cool and freaking amazing. Maybe finding a theme to direct the sculptures exploration would be cool. A narrative or story behind it always brings the project to another level. Instead of being just beautiful it has a meaning behind it!
Good luck!
As per Regina’s response, I’m a bit confused about what you’re proposing to make but they both sound like very meaty ideas. Are the models above a machine that you propose to build for the glass idea which would extrude heated glass? That’s really cool and fitting especially in regard to the types of projects Jas has made in the past. (I would expect to see Grace’s voice emerge more in the patterns that it extrudes out. Maybe it could be associated with the jewelry you’ve been making). The experimentations you guys have been doing with glass are really cool and surprising and I would love to see this carried out in your final. The concept of testing the fragility of the material against the efficiency of the machine is a really interesting one and different from anything the rest of us have been thinking of doing. I agree with Regina’s comment about defining what the end product of the installation would be. Is it the process that is the highlight of the experience? Is it an installation of glass objects?
Looking at the attached powerpoint, the light sculpture idea seems more visually fleshed out in terms of what kind of effect you are trying to evoke. Exploring different patterns and imagery through light and shadows looks like it would be a lot of fun and also easier to make, since you can make relatively small objects with large effects. You wouldn’t have to invent and build a machine to get to the end product… but maybe it is the building of the machine that you are interested in as well? This second idea would work well as an installation, but both of the ideas are promising and I’m excited to see what you guys come up with in the end.
I would love to see large gears meshing and turning together, reminds me of Charles’ Major Studio 1 Final project. Large moving gears and systems similar to that remind me also of the planetary solar system models.
First, aren’t there supposed to be 3 proposals? Where is the one from Grace about wearables?
Between these two, I’m not sure about the second one. Is it a working machine? What is it used for? What does it mean? Where is it installed? It looks nice in the visual mock-up, but I don’t know much about it!
Oh wait, there’s a link to a proposal. Let me read it…
Okay there were some cool patterns in there! So, um… is that your 3rd proposal?
Look, glass is awesome so you should probably do that one. But the parameters you specify here have to be clear as variables in the project itself. People need to understand that you’re modifying variables to produce stuff. Also, do YOU produce it, or do you make the machine and then OTHER people do the glassmaking? That would be cool.
